Villa Alvor is the Aveleda project that renews the connection between the Algarve region and wine. In a deep interaction between land and sea, this brand pays tribute to the two cultures that most influenced the culture and history of the Algarve.

The name Villa (word of Roman origin) Alvor (word of Arabic origin) explains the connection between these two cultures. It is in these lands, at the foot of the Serra de Monchique, where the color of the clay and limestone of the soil contrasts with the green vines and the blue skies, that everything happens. The wines created here are defined by fruit, minerality and an unusual freshness – not only to the region but also to the country. In the 30 hectares of vineyards, which will come to grow in the coming years, we highlight the varieties that develop in a special way. Traditional and little used varieties, such as Moscatel Galego-Roxo and Negra Mole.

Villa Alvor

A living balance between Culture and Nature

In Villa Alvor's identity besides the terroir, the historical connection between the Roman and Arab culture is also very symbolic. The Arabs - who occupied the Algarve lands for more than five centuries - have always encouraged viticulture and allowed the production of wine, that was associated to Christians. They left deep marks on the agriculture, architecture and even in the Portuguese language. In Villa Alvor there is a hermitage, in the middle of the Mediterranean woods, dating from the 18th century, where crossing between Christian and Arab motifs is evident. A place that makes us travel in time.

In 1835 this estate belonged to Frederico da Paz Mendes, Viscount of Rocha de Portimão, which encouraged agricultural cultivation. But only in the 90s, through the hands of João Mendes, a full bet is made on viticulture and wine production. In 2019, Aveleda buys this Estate from João Mendes and this is when the Villa Alvor project starts - a new brand, a new range of wines, a project based in sustainability, in the preservation of indigenous species and in the value of Algarve's nature.

The Region

Algarve is the southernmost wine region in Portugal. Separated from the Alentejo by a chain of 3 mountain ranges, which help to create a special climate, the west winds play an important role here. With around 45 registered wine producers, and less than 2000 hectares of planted vineyards, this region still has a lot to explore. The connection to wine, gradually lost with the expansion of tourism in the region, is a feeling that Villa Alvor intends to revive through a strong identification with the Algarve culture.

Philosophy

This is a project with deep Algarve roots, where the interpretation of vineyards and cultural surroundings are combined. By looking at the soils and the vines, knowing their interaction and cycle, we are able to reproduce in each wine what this terroir brings us best. Imbued with the region's historical past, its gastronomy and the Mediterranean lifestyle, we defined a concrete personality for our wines. The wide horizon over the sea is also an inspiration and a starting point. A motivation to always do more and better.
